Twilight is the first book in the Twilight Saga, a series about a girl who falls in love with a vampire. This excerpt would give you an idea what the story's about:
About three things I was absolutely positive:
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him–and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be–that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
Before I start sharing my thoughts about the story, let me share how I accidentally bought this book. Yes it was accidental and I have never heard about Stephenie and her books before that day.
I was in a mall and had quite a few bags with me and I thought about dumping them in the SM Department Store baggage counter. On my way there, I passed by National Bookstore and just decided to leave my bags with them. Just after leaving my bags with NBS, I realized that they're very particular about non-customers leaving baggage with them, so I made a mental note to buy something when I come back to pick up my stuff just to avoid any conflict or issue... and I ended up buying Twilight because it was prominently displayed and along my way to the baggage counter. Yes, I read the blurb at the back and thought it was quite interesting, but I am at a point in my life where I would rather just watch vampire stories on TV than read about them. So, I was kind of surprised when I picked it up. Got home and left it at a corner because I still had a Stephen King novel to finish. Got to it after a few days and was pleasantly surprised!
Now to my thoughts:
1. I found the writing style reminiscent of JK Rowling... beautifully simple and easy to understand.
2. The story has very colorful characters. I like Edward (I mean, who wouldn't?!) but I found Jasper's character quite appealing: young, restless and does not have very good self control. Kinda reminds me of someone I know... Hmmmm...
3. More about the characters. I was fascinated how Stephenie was able to introduce and showcase a lot of character development and insight just within the first installment of the series. Readers easily identify with their favorite vamps!
4. There were times when I just hated Bella (more jealous than anything else, I think!) and agreed with her at the same time that she's not good enough for Edward.
5. Somewhere in the middle of the book, I began thinking that there really was no major villain or conflict in the story except for the minor encounters with Rosalie and Lauren. Just when you think you know what's going to happen next, Stephenie throws a curve ball at you and transitions from the Sweet Valley-ish plot to a more action-packed and exhilarating adventure.
Overall, I loved it and I love the fact that it's now a movie even more!!! Some people would disagree with me, but I think they did a very good job in casting. You will have to read the book first before you can tell me whether you agree with me or not.
I just bought the second installment of the saga, New Moon, and plan to read it on Monday. I am sure it's going to be as good or even better than the first book and I plan to write all about it by next week! in the meantime, enjoy this trailer from the movie coming out November or December this year! :P
